Made an unpleasant discovery on the BRZ today. All four tires were like this, with even worse cracking in some spots, a few of the blocks were actually separating where the tread meets the sidewall . Tires were manufactured in fall 2015, had 36,000 miles, and still had 40% tread depth.

This seems to be a common thing with the Primacies. They are trash anyway, time for some sticky meats.

Sounds like it’s time to find a parking lot and leave with 0% tread depth.

I didn't hate them to be honest. It was fun playing with that little bit of step out. New shoes are grippier though (and cheaper, pricing on the Primacy is dumb)

I feel like Michelin tires all end up looking like that in short order. Possibly I’m a moron but I wouldn’t even worry about the cracking shown there, those areas should be thick enough that it seems unli ke ly cause a blowout. Down on the sidewall would be a different story. Of course if you are actually going to start losing tread blocks, that’s a different story.

The ‘Seperit Speed Grip’ tires on my car are cracking too. I’m gonna have to replace mine before the next winter.
They still ride and grip well though.
The cracking I see in those pictures seems minor and not enough yet to replace them.

Funny you mention this. I too found dry rot in the tread channels of my less 2015 nittos. They don’t have more than 10k miles on them, and the tread looks great, but cracks in the tread grooves. I’ll swing by the tire shop tomorrow to see what they will do, but I feel your pain.

My front AS3's have the crac king too. It’s nothing to actually worry about until you see the sidewall having tiny splits.

That is unsettling.

It mostly the separating blocks that made me call them done. Especially since tires on this car are often subjected to higher lateral G loads

Just slather some Bondo over the cracks and you’ll be so grounded to the ground, you won’t be able to budge the tires from the ground

Are they Michelins?

Same here. All the tires on Mrs McMike’s 20K mile 20
15 Accord have dry rot on the sidewall
.
Three tires have a date code of 2315, one has 0
916
What the fuck?
3-4
years? With the miles she puts on the car, I knew there was a
chance that they may dry rot before they wear out, but come ON!

EVERY TIRE ON EVERY DAMN MIATA ON CRAIGSLIST I LOOKED AT HAD TIRES LIKE THIS!!!! The most frustrating part were the sellers who CONSTANTLY were claiming “new tires, great treadlife” and then they would look like this. No concept at all of the damn date code. Meanwhile that is the only thing I looked at since tread is irrelevant if I dont plan on ever driving into any form of water. Finally the one I bought had tires that were actually only 1 year old. Granted, they are shitty all seasons that are less grippy on dry pavement than the snow tires on my Subaru. But still at least they are safe to use for daily driving.

I mean, regardless of date code, if they were just bought/installed, they’re technically new tires........

Attached is Michelin’s guide to cracking and what’s acceptable for their rubber and what needs to be replaced. But let’s say your tires were on the border, if you contact them they will take care of people. Michelin’s warranty coverage is astounding, and it’s why I continue to always get them. Shit, with the e-Golfs we only waited a few months before replacing the OEM Bridgestones with some Michelins.

I just noticed my motorcycle tires are starting to crack. Looked at the date code, 7500, so that’s almost 19 years old. That’ll do. Under $200 for a set....
add it to the list my man.

Oh no all of these were definitely installed “just a few years ago”. But the date code just confirms regardless of whatever bullshit they spew how old the tire actually is.
